A sculpture, valued at $28,000, was stolen from a Lincoln Avenue retail store last month, and San Jose police do not yet have any suspects or significant leads in the case.
The bronze sculpture, a limited edition by Ramon Parmenter, was stolen from Frumas, a consignment furniture store, 2202-2208 Lincoln Ave., on about March 5, said San Jose Police Det. Barry Barner. He said police believe the approximately 100-pound artwork was stolen from a display pedestal about 15 feet inside the store's front entrance, while the store was open.
"It's not something you can throw in your back pocket," Barner said.
He said the department has been investigating the theft so far by trying to find ways to purchase the piece from the suspect, placing ads in newspapers and using other techniques. As that hasn't worked, he said, police are now asking for help from the public.
Barner also said that police in Burlingame have contacted him about similar thefts in their area over the past year.
The sculpture, called Fragrance of Love, is No. 45 of 50 in the limited edition. It depicts a bronze woman wrapped in a white sheet or robe, holding a red rose.
To provide information on the case, call Barner at 408.277.4521. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 408.947.STOP.
