LHS wins first place at county championships
Lincoln High School's mock trial team was found guilty of taking first place at the Santa Clara County Mock Trial Championships on March 30, in Riverside. The nine-member defense team beat the defending champion team from Stockdale High School in Kern County after a three-hour competition. There were 34 teams participating in the county championships.
Six of the nine members were new to the team and had never participated in the mock trial experience. The team of 20 will now be broken down into a team of eight members who will compete in the National High School Mock Trial Championships May 9-13, in Omaha, Neb. The case the team will try at the National Championships is 70 pages in length and involves a student charged with possession of an illegal substance.
U.S. Rep. Mike Honda to speak in Campbell
U.S. Rep. Mike Honda will talk to his local constituents 'in an event put together by the Campbell City Council.'
"It's an opportunity for Mike to share what his priorities are." spokesman Ernest Baynard said.
The informal and free public meeting will be held on April 17, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at the council chambers in the Campbell City Hall, 70 N. First St. in Campbell.
Meeting planned for River Glen Park
District 6 Councilman Ken Yeager's office and the department of parks, recreation and neighborhood services are hosting a meeting next week to discuss plans for renovating the playgrounds and restrooms at the River Glen Park.
The improvements will be paid for by parks and recreation bond funds approved by San Jose voters in November.
"It's part of the safety standards to bring the playground and restrooms up to current code," City Parks Project Manager Michael LaRocca said.
Next week's meeting is the first time the city will discuss its plans for the park with the community, LaRocca said. He said the process from community meetings to renovated park should take about 18 months.
The meeting will be held on April 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the River Glen Park shelter building at the intersection of Pine and Coastland avenues.
For more information, contact LaRocca or Carla Ruigh at 408.277.4573.
Meeting on traffic open to residents
Residents are invited to attend a general meeting of the Traffic Safe Communities Network, a countywide coalition of more than 45 government, law enforcement and traffic safety advocacy organizations staffed by the county public health department.
The group meets together quarterly to review its activities of the past three months and provides opportunities for people to join the goal-specific groups, which meet monthly.
The meeting will be on April 16, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the United Way office, at 1922 The Alameda, Room 107, in San Jose. For more information and to RSVP to the meeting, call 408.885.2201.
New law says cars must yield to buses
The yield to bus program was launched by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority on April 2. The program is to run until 2002 and will give buses the right of way on the road, particularly when they pull back into traffic after picking up passengers at bus stops. Buses will be equipped with signs on their back ends to let drivers know they must yield.
