Rams post big win over 'Dogs
But it comes after first league loss
By Dick Sparrer
Most baseball teams would be happy after a week when they ripped 26 hits and scored 25 runs in two games. But the Willow Glen Rams put up those numbers last week, and they weren't happy at all.
Oh, the Rams were pretty happy after an 18-0 win over San Jose Academy on Friday. But that win followed a tough 12-7 loss to Andrew Hill to open the week--a loss that spoiled an otherwise perfect league season for the Rams.
Willow Glen jumped out to an 8-0 start in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, but the Falcons stuck the Rams with their first league loss last Wednesday afternoon.
Still, the Rams returned quickly to their winning ways by unloading on the Bulldogs 18-0 on Friday.
Junior hurler Nate McDonald was the recipient of the awesome offensive attack for Willow Glen. McDonald was the winning pitcher as the Rams blanked San Jose on just three hits in the game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Jared Jeffrey was the offensive hero for Willow Glen with a triple, two doubles and a single to drive in three runs in the win. Jeffrey led a 16-hit assault with his four-hit day.
David Macchi singled and doubled to drive in two runs and Will Rideau and Alvin Rideau each had two hits to knock in two runs apiece.
Daniel Rice had two hits and Pete Watts doubled and drove in four runs in the win. Bob Hobbs also doubled for the Rams.
The win left Willow Glen 9-1 in league play and 9-4 for the year. The Rams will try to improve on that mark this week when they host Independence on April 12, 3:30 p.m., and James Lick on April 14, 3:30 p.m.
Willow Glen was handed its first league loss earlier in the week by Andrew Hill. Matt Durkin took a 4-0 mound record into the game, but was tagged with the tough loss.
Gabe Candelaria doubled and singled twice for the Rams and Rice had three hits. W. Rideau belted a home run and Macchi doubled. Willow Glen pounded out 10 hits, but it wasn't enough against the Falcons.
Rams fall to 76ers
The Willow Glen girls softball team dropped an 11-3 decision to Independence last week in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Rams trailed just 2-0 after three innings, but the 76ers scored in each of the next four innings on the way to the lopsided victory.
Melissa Reyes and Angel Ocampo had two hits apiece in the game for the Rams, but Willow Glen had just five hits as a team.
The Rams will try to get back on the winning track this week when they take on Del Mar and Mt. Pleasant, but it will be no easy task. Mt. Pleasant leads the division with a 6-0 record and Del Mar is close behind at 4-1.
Willow Glen, with a 1-5 record in division play and 6-7 overall, will visit Del Mar on April 12, 3:30 p.m., before hosting Mount Pleasant on April 14, 3:30 p.m.
Panthers win
Shannon Linerud and Stacey Arde tossed the Presentation girls softball team to back-to-back wins in league play last week.
The Panthers beat Piedmont Hills 7-0 on a four-hit shutout by Arde, and they came back with a tight 5-4 win over Oak Grove on a six-hitter by Linerud. Presentation is now 3-3 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL and 14-7 for the year.
Arde went the distance for the win over the Pirates, striking out nine and walking none. She helped herself at the plate with a home run and two singles to knock in three runs.
Linerud struck out 10 as she pushed her pitching record to 6-2 with the wins over the Eagles. She was also a hitting star with a double and two singles to plate three runs.
Arde had four hits for the Panthers and Adrian St. Cin had two hits.
