Ocampo, Rams net wins over Panthers, Lions

    By Dick Sparrer

Wins didn't come easy for Jose Ocampo last week.

The Willow Glen sophomore had to go three sets against Prospect, and another three sets against Lincoln a day later.

But the results were the same for Ocampo. And they were the same, too, for the Willow Glen boys tennis team.

Ocampo won twice to lead the Rams to back-to-back wins in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Rams beat the Panthers 5-2 on Wednesday, then came back on Thursday with a 5-2 victory over the Lions. The two victories helped the Rams improve to 7-3 in the Santa Teresa Division and to 9-3 for the year.

Ocampo started Willow Glen on the road to the win over the Panthers with a hard-earned 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Huy Nguyen followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.

Willow Glen swept in doubles play to clinch the team win. Chris Lyons and Minh Phan teamed for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, Loc Nguyen and Eric Bursch won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Mike Nguyen and Alex Kane won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

Ocampo came back with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to help the Rams to the 5-2 win over the Lions.

Nick Burggraff nailed a tough 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and Cyrus Yazdani won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.

The team of L. Nguyen-Bursch (6-0, 6-1) won at No. 2 doubles and M. Nguyen-Kane (6-4, 6-2) won at No. 3, just as they had a day earlier against Prospect.

The Rams will close out the regular season this week when they visit Santa Teresa on April 11, 3:15 p.m.
