Speak Out
Front page should be used for positive news
What has happened to your newspaper? Are you looking for sensationalism to sell papers? No, it can't be that, you give your publications away to sell advertising. Does negativism and innuendoes get the ads? I wonder.
I am making reference to the front page story of the April 7, 1999 issue, "Dispute with its landlord could close The Glen." I honestly don't think the rental lease issue is anyone's business other than the principals involved. Are you now planning to print a column or series on landlord/tenant disputes? I am sure that there are more than just this one commercial dispute between a landlord and a tenant. Let's read about all of the commercial lease problems and then you can report on residential landlord and tenant issues.
I consider this type of reporting totally unnecessary. In my mind it creates the impression that the Willow Glen Resident has a "get the Glen" mission and I have to wonder why. This business has provided programs for battered women and I believe won a San Jose Beautiful award.
Where are your front page stories on the positive? Your paper's put-down of people reminds me of the innuendo you put forth in the Frank Fiscalini vice mayor article in the January 20th issue of the Resident which stated, "Fiscalini possesses something the Latino mayor doesn't--a practiced bilingual tongue. Señor Fiscalini could fill in at the Spanish-only gigs." Also, why was the vice-mayor article placed on page seven and The Glen article merited the front page? Could it be to promote the negative over the positive?
Dick Schwartz
