Much-deserved win for Garcia

Willow Glen beats Valley Christian

By Dick Sparrer

No one deserved a win more than Niki Garcia. The Willow Glen sophomore hurler had tossed a one-hitter against Pioneer to open the week... but she lost 1-0.

She came back with a solid performance against Independence two days later, holding the 76ers to just a run over seven innings... but she lost when Independence scored two runs in the eighth.

And she appeared to be headed to a similar fate on Friday afternoon. Garcia was tossing zeroes again, this time at Valley Christian. The Rams, though, were being held scoreless as well.

So when Willow Glen picked up a run in the top of the seventh, Garcia knew just what she had to do. The sophomore right-hander blanked the Warriors in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 1-0 victory for the Rams.

Garcia tossed a one-hit shutout at Valley Christian to lead the Rams to the win. She also tripled to help her own cause at the plate. Colleen Wozny also tripled for the winners.

Willow Glen improved to 1-4 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with the win. The Rams are 3-8 for the year.

Garcia and the Rams had lost an extra-inning heartbreaker to Independence just a day earlier. The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the 76ers tied it in the second. That's how it remained until Independence snapped the tie with two runs in the eighth.

Danielle Garcia had two hits to lead Willow Glen offensively.

N. Garcia tripled and singled twice and tossed a one-hitter, but the Rams opened the week with a 1-0 loss to Pioneer.

Maria Sedillo-Glatt whirled a four-hit shutout for the Mustangs, and Pioneer got her the only run she needed with a single marker in the sixth.

It was the first of three wins in the week for the Mustangs. Sedillo-Glatt came back to toss a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Mt. Pleasant, and she flipped a one-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Gunderson.

Sedillo-Glatt, now 9-4 this season, fanned seven in her no-hit win over the Cardinals. Stephanie Noble had two hits for the Mustangs, and Casey Gividen drove in two runs. Lisa Nicolosi ripped a double.

Anastasia Beavers cracked four hits and Amy Thornhill singled, doubled and homered to drive in three runs in the 7-0 win over the Grizzlies. Tekla Snell singled and doubled. The Mustangs are now 5-0 in the division and 9-5 for the year.

Presentation, meanwhile, lost a pair of games to slip to 3-8 for the year and to 0-4 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL.

Kari Burke blasted a solo homer in the fourth, and Sara Wiedlin tossed a six-hitter, but the Panthers lost 2-1 to powerful Leigh.

Burke singled and tripled, and Ashleigh D'Angelo drove in three runs with a pair of hits, but Presentation dropped a 9-8 decision to Westmont. Alyssa Messier knocked in a pair of runs for the Panthers.

Wiedlin was tagged with the tough pitching loss.
