Website is reuniting lost pets with owners

Willow Glen pet owners who have lost their animals can use Missingpets.com to post notices about their missing pets. The site lists advertisements alphabetically by state and city, with a reference number assigned to each pet. When a tip comes in regarding a lost or found pet, contact information is emailed to both parties, whereupon they contact each other.

"What was needed was a centralized community bulletin board specifically for posting [information on] lost and found pets. Not only is this possible with the Internet, but you don't have to limit yourself to the local community," says Cincinnati-based webmaster Curtis Esche. "I previously did some Internet programming for the government and some nonprofit organizations and decided to put my experience to work to help pet owners find their lost pets."

Missingpets.com has been featured in the book 300 Incredible Things for Pet Lovers on the Internet, by Bob Vella and Ken Leebow. For more information, visit www.missingpets.com.

Shelter is available for disaster victims

The Haven emergency shelter for victims of fires and other disasters opened Thursday, April 4, at 937 Locust St. in San Jose and can provide housing for up to 20 people.

The Emergency Housing Consortium, which manages the Haven's four housing units, provided new furnishings for the Haven: three two-bedroom units and a one-bedroom unit. The Haven's buildings originally housed nuns from Sacred Heart Church and School.

The Haven project is a partnership between the city of San Jose, the Emergency Housing Consortium and the American Red Cross. For more information, call 408.277.5800.

    VTA holding workshops

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is holding a series of community workshops to help determine future stations along the BART Extension to San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara. This series of community workshops will include an overview of the BART extension Project, a presentation by city staff on the existing land use plans in the station areas and an overview of station facility planning, urban design and transit-oriented development. VTA would like to receive public input early in the station design process. Each community workshop will focus on the immediate neighborhood in which the meeting is held.

In San Jose, there will be workshops April 17, 6-8 p.m. at the Anne Darling Elementary School cafeteria, 333 N. 33rd St., and April 18, 6-8 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 24 N. Fifth St. For specific directions on how to ride VTA bus lines to any of these meeting locations, please call VTA customer service at 408.321.2300 or 408.321.2330 (TDD only).
