And so is the team's freshman senstation, Janelle Zetterquist

    By Dick Sparrer

The girls of Willow Glen were able to run, jump and throw well enough last week to take a big step in the race for the track and field championship in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Rams outran San Jose Academy 96-31 to push their league record to 6-0 and their season mark to 7-0.

"The girls are one step closer to a league title," said Victor Santamaria, a Willow Glen assistant coach who works with the distance runners.

Junior Michelle Castaneda, sophomore Edna Sison and freshman Janelle Zetterquist starred for the Rams in the win over the Bulldogs.

Zetterquist remained unbeaten in league competition with wins in the mile and the 800 meters.

"We swept the mile, 800 and 2-mile," said Santamaria.

Zetterquist led the sweep in the mile by finishing first in 5:51. Junior Vanessa James was second in 5:57 with soph Jennifer Cook third in 5:51.

The freshman also led the sweep in the 800, covering the two laps in 2:41 to finish first. James was second in 2:45 and Cook was third in 2:48.

Cook came through with a win in the 2-mile to lead another Willow Glen sweep. The sophomore ran 13:21 to finish first with junior Andrea Miller second in 15:00 and freshman Francesca McArthur third in 15:01.

Castaneda was a double winner, taking the 100-meter hurdles in 17.8 and winning the high jump with a leap of 4-4. She also teamed with Sison and freshmen Eleni Mastorakos and Krista Smestad for a first in the 400-meter relay in 57.8.

Sison sprinted to a first in the 200 meters in 29.6 for the Rams.

Crystal Salazar heaved the shot put 28-5 to tie for first and freshman Erica Preiman flew 28-0 in the triple jump to nail a Willow Glen win.

The Rams will try to nail down the division championship when they return from spring break to take on Pioneer. Willow Glen will host the Mustangs on April 26, 3 p.m., in the final dual meet of the regular season.

The Willow Glen boys with take a 2-4 league record into the meet against Pioneer after losing a 62-61 heartbreaker to San Jose last week.

The Rams lost "another close one," said Santamaria, despite getting strong efforts from freshman Ngoan Phan and sophomore Gilbert Lozoya.

Phan won three events for the Rams, running to firsts in the mile in 5:03, the 800 in 2:18 and the 2-mile in 11:02.

Lozoya sprinted to a win in the 200 in 25.1 and finished second in the 100. He teamed with Luis Varela, Cody Fickes and Trung Nguyen for a first in the 400 relay in 48.3, and later joined with Varela, Fickes and Alex Green for a win in the 4x400 relay in 3:58.

Fickes raced to a win in the 400 in 58.0 with Varela second in 58.2, and sophomore Amir Perry took the shot put with a 37-5 heave.

Following the dual meet with Pioneer, Willow Glen will send teams to Los Gatos for the frosh-soph league finals on April 28, the varsity trials on May 1 and the varsity finals on May 3.

    Rams net split

The Willow Glen boys tennis team split a pair of matches last week to clinch second place in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Rams were 11-3 in the division and are 14-3 for the year.

"We won the public school league title," quipped Willow Glen coach Don DuShane, who added, "I am going to submit the team record to see if we can secure an at-large CCS berth."

The Rams are off for spring break, but will return to the court for the Santa Teresa Division individual tournament April 27-30 at Pioneer.

The Rams lost at No. 1 singles, but won every other match in a 6-1 win over the Andrew Hill to open the week.

    WG alone in 1st

Matt Durkin and Bobby Hobbs put solid performances back-to-back to help the Willow Glen baseball team continue to roll through the Santa Teresa Division schedule.

Durkin tossed a four-hitter to lead the Rams to a 3-2 win over Mount Pleasant just two days after Hobbs had flipped Willow Glen to an 8-2 win over Prospect.

The two wins helped the Rams improve to 11-1 in the division and to 13-4 for the year.

Senior Mike DeBono tripled and singled to lead a nine-hit attack for the Rams. Luis Pacheco and Pete Watts also ripped two hits apiece in the win.

Willow Glen rallied for three runs in the third and that proved to be all Durkin needed as he fanned 11 on his way to the win that pushed his season record to 4-2.

Jared Jeffrey had two hits to knock in two runs for the Rams and Pacheco ripped a pair of singles.

Willow Glen is off for spring break this week, but while the Rams may not be in league action, they'll still be busy.
