    Tough diamond losses for Rams

    Softball, baseball teams both fall

    By Dick Sparrer

The week started and finished with two of the best efforts of the year for the Willow Glen girls softball team. Still, it was a tough week for the Lady Rams.

Willow Glen lost three games last week to slip to 1-8 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

But the Rams certainly didn't play like a 1-8 team in either a 1-0 loss to Pioneer to open the week or an 8-4 10-inning loss to first-place Mt. Pleasant to close out the week.

Willow Glen gave the division-leading Cardinals all they could handle for nine innings before losing an 8-4 heartbreaker to MP.

Mt. Pleasant had jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the second and three more in the fifth, but Willow Glen came fighting back. The Rams scored two in the home half of the fifth, one in the sixth and one more in the seventh to tie it 4-4.

The clubs entered extra innings and played two scoreless frames before the first-place Cards unloaded for four runs in the 10th. That stood up for an 8-4 win.

Janelle Calderon was stuck with the tough pitching loss. But the freshman did some damage with her bat with a single and a double.

Angie Keeth had two hits for the Rams. Michelle Sanchez ripped a triple and Desiree Dagnino doubled.

Willow Glen had dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Pioneer to open the week. Calderon tossed a four-hitter and allowed just one run, but that first-inning marker for the Mustangs turned out to be the only run of the game.

Maria Gonzales tripled and Angel Ocampo doubled to lead a four-hit attack for the Rams.

Amy Thornhill had two hits for the Mustangs.

Willow Glen lost 10-0 to Del Mar in five innings in the middle of the week.

In other local softball action, Presentation won two of three games in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. The Panthers blanked Leigh 4-0 and edged Santa Teresa 2-1, but lost a 1-0 thriller to Westmont.

Sara Wiedlin tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out 14 along the way, to lead the Panthers to the win over the Longhorns.

Kathy Medica homered and singled to drive in two runs in the win. Jana Arde singled and doubled and Shannon Linerud tripled.

Wiedlin ran her pitching record to 9-3 for the year with the 2-1 win over the Saints later in the week. The Saints took the lead with a run in the third, but Presentation scored twice in the sixth to win it.

Linerud had two hits for the winners, who improved to 5-4 in league and to 21-9 for the year with the win.

Arde was stuck with the tough defeat in the 1-0 loss to Westmont. The Warriors made a first-inning run stand up for the victory.

Arde, who slipped 5-3 for the year despite whirling a two-hitter, doubled to lead a four-hit attack for Presentation.

    Rams lose two

David Macchi ripped four hits in two games, but the Willow Glen baseball team lost twice last week to fall out of first place in the West Valley Division.

The Rams dropped a 2-0 decision to first-place Independence before falling 10-3 to Lick in eight innings.

Independence holds the division lead with a 10-2 record, and Willow Glen is second at 9-3.

Bob Hobbs tossed a six-hitter and allowed just single runs in the fourth and sixth, but the Rams lost 2-0 to the 76ers. Macchi had two of Willow Glen's six hits.

Macchi singled and doubled, and Will Rideau singled, doubled and tripled, but Willow Glen lost a tough 10-3 decision to Lick.

The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie through five-plus innings before the Rams scored in the bottom of the sixth. Lick tied it in the seventh to force the game into extra innings, then the Comets broke the game open with nine runs in the eighth.
