Hobbs, Durkin toss Rams to wins
Panthers, Rams split in softball
By Dick Sparrer
Bobby Hobbs and Matt Durkin must have decided that enough was enough.
The Willow Glen baseball team had lost three of four games to slip out of first place in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, so the two WG hurlers decided to do something about it.
What they did was record outstanding back-to-back mound performances to get the Rams back on the winning track.
Hobbs tossed a four-hitter to lead the Rams to a 2-1 league win over Yerba Buena, and Durkin came back with a no-hitter in a 15-1 win over Fremont Christian in the first round of the Silver Creek Tournament last weekend.
Hobbs went the distance for the tight win over the Warriors, pushing his mound record to 5-1 with the victory.
Jared Jeffrey ripped a solo homer for the Rams in the win. David Macchi doubled and singled twice for the winners, and Pete Watts had two hits.
The Rams scored a run in the first, but YB tied it with a run in the third. Willow Glen broke the tie with a run in the fourth, and that was all Hobbs needed.
Willow Glen, 10-3 in the West Valley Division, pushed its record to 11-6 for the year with the rousing 15-1 win over Fremont Christian last weekend.
The Rams led 4-1 after four innings before unloading for 11 runs in the top of the fifth. The game ended on the 10-run rule at the end of the inning.
Durkin finished with a five-inning no-hitter. He struck out 11 and walked just three as he ran his pitching record to 5-1.
Will Rideau led a 15-hit offensive attack with a double and three singles. He drove in a pair of runs for the Rams.
Daniel Rice doubled twice and singled to knock in three runs for Willow Glen, and Gabe Candelaria had three hits.
Josh Weaver homered and singled to plate a couple of runs and Watts belted a two-run homer in the win. Macchi also drove in a pair of runs.
Willow Glen continues play in the Silver Creek Tournament this week. The Rams were to face Mt. Pleasant on Monday and will host Hill on April 26, 3:30 p.m.
Panthers split
The Presentation girls softball team split a pair of 1-0 decisions in the Mount Hamilton Division of the BVAL last week. The Panthers edged Mitty 1-0 to open the week, but lost a tough 1-0 nod to Leland two days later.
Jana Arde went the distance to flip a one-hit shutout at the Monarchs to open the week. Arde, who struck out six, pushed her pitching record to 6-2 with the win.
The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie through five innings before Presentation scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth.
It was much different later in the week. Leland scored a run in the first and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory.
Shannon Linerud doubled for the Panthers in the loss.
Presentation is now 6-5 in the Mount Hamilton Division and 22-10 for the year.
Jones 7th for Rams
It was a record-breaking day when top young athletes from the section turned out for the CCS Frosh-Soph Classic on April 7 at Los Gatos.
In all, 10 new meet records were set in the event, all of them in the girls competition.
Willow Glen's Chris Jones placed in the boys division at the prestigious meet. Jones nailed a seventh in the shot put with a heave of 46-5.
Rams also split, too
The Willow Glen girls also split a couple of league decisions last week. The Rams lost 3-1 to Gunderson, but came back to beat James Lick 5-1.
Freshman Janelle Calderon tossed a four-hitter in the win over the Comets. She lost her bid for a shutout when Lick scored a single run in the sixth.
Melissa Rice knocked in two runs with a pair of hits in the Willow Glen victory.
Willow Glen is now 2-10 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL and 7-13 for the year. The Rams are off until May 3 when they host Valley Christian in a 3:30 p.m. league game.
Staton leads Rams
Matt Staton fired a four-over par 40, but the Willow Glen golf team dropped a 207-221 decision to Valley Christian last week at the Summitpointe Golf Course.
The Rams, who had lost 206-214 to the Warriors earlier in the week at the Santa Teresa Golf Course, slipped to 5-5 in the Mount Hamilton Division of the BVAL and to 7-5 for the year.
Beahm a real killer
Guy Beahm pounded 12 kills to the floor to lead the Willow Glen boys volleyball team to a 15-13, 15-13, 15-11 win over Leigh last week in Mount Hamilton Division play.
The Rams are now 5-2 in the division and 17-6 for the year.
