WG teachers complete Code Red training
All teachers in the Willow Glen Middle and High schools, along with other middle and high school teachers in San Jose, have completed Code Red Training, a new program developed by the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD) and the San Jose Police Department's mobile emergency response group and equipment (MERGE) unit. The training centers on new lockdown, classroom management and evacuation protocols for such emergency situations as an armed intruder on school grounds. "The support and cooperation we have received on this initiative from the city of San Jose and other school districts have been incredible," says ESUHSD Superintendent Joe Coto. "I commend the mayor, city council, chief of police, superintendents and board of trustees from all of our school districts on their efforts to build strong partnerships. We have united as a community to ensure students are safe."

Foundation receives Lifeguard donation
On April 24, Mark Hyde, CEO of Lifeguard, one of Northern California's leading HMOs, presented a $50,000 gift to Santa Clara Family Health Foundation Executive Director Craig Walsh at Washington Elementary School. San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales joined Hyde in presenting Lifeguard's donation to Santa Clara Family Health. The gesture is part of Lifeguard's plan to support the family health foundation and improve access to health programs for children and families, especially those without medical insurance.
