Change of date for SC County Fair
Celebrate the Moo-Lennium with the Santa Clara County Fair. This year, the fair will sport many changes, and the most notable is the change in the date. The fair is traditionally held in late summer, but this year the fair will run May 12 to May 21. Because of the change in date, the fair will gear more events toward education and school groups. In the Choirs Night Competition Program on May 17, the voice students of Willow Glen High School, under the direction of Katherine Donovan, will compete for one of the fair's cash awards. Contributions from local businesses and individuals have built the fair's educational grants and scholarship coffers to $40,000.
The school competitions will be held at the Christopher Park stage at the fairgrounds. Jazz bands will perform on May 15, the ensemble bands on May 16, the choirs on May 17, and drama students on May 18.
The Santa Clara County Fairgrounds are at 344 Tully Road.

Education department releases test results
The California Department of Education released a revised list of Academic Performance Index ratings on April 27. The scores originally released were the results of a statewide test all students were required to take. Although the new rankings don't change schools' original January scores, they do show a comparison with schools that have similar economic and social backgrounds. The scores are based on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best.
Thirteen schools from San Jose Unified School District made the revised list, including Hacienda Elementary School which has a state ranking of eight and rates a three against similar schools.
SJUSD board member Carol Meyers said administrators won't really be able to use the scores to their benefit until the test has been around for about five years. After that period, administrators will be able to recognize patterns in testing scores.
A complete list of the rankings are at www.cde.ca.gov/psaa/api.com.

Channel 54 needs auction volunteers
KTEH's 12th annual Great Auction is right around the corner, but there are no volunteers yet to run it. The public television station depends on the efforts of volunteers to make this a successful event, but signups have been slow. The station cites the change of date for the lack of volunteers. The auction is usually held in April, but this year it will run May 9 to May 20. Bid takers, bid sorters and markers, bid captains and merchandise locators are needed. KTEH welcomes individual and group volunteers. For information, contact volunteer coordinator Shannon Escalera at 408.795.5445.
