Women's Open House
The San Jose branch of the American Association of University Women is having an open house May 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at its headquarters building, located at 1165 Minnesota Ave., next to the Willow Glen Library. The association promotes equity, lifelong education and positive societal change for all women and girls.

Student earns award
Willow Glen Middle School student Emily Roberts was one of the recipients of the 2002 Seagate/Sharks Foundation Eighth Grade Leadership Award. A special awards dinner March 27 at the Compaq Center in San Jose honored all 68 award winners with a special plaque, an autographed puck from Gary Suter, and four tickets to a Sharks game.
The award is given to one eighth-grade student at each participating school who has demonstrated excellence in academic and social achievement, as well as leadership amongst his/her peers.

Gala at The Glen
San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales is hosting the 5th annual Gala at The Glen benefiting the support network for battered women this year. The event is happening May 15 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at The Glen, located at 1180 Lincoln Ave.
To date, the association has raised $87,800, just short of its goal of $100,000 for the year, in support of critical services for families in crisis.
This year's special guest will be Brandi Chastain of the San Jose CyberRays, and the MC is Stacy Hendler of KGO-TV.

Bike to Work Day
Thousands of Bay Area residents are leaving their cars at home May 16 to recognize the eighth annual Bike to Work Day. RIDES for Bay Area Commuters, Inc., local bicycle coalitions and hundreds of volunteers are working together to encourage individuals to try bicycling to work as a healthy, fun, inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative to driving.
