Los Gatos Creek Trail Cleanup Day

Willow Glen residents will get the chance to make their creek trail sparkle like new next week.

May 19 is National River Cleanup Day, and the Willow Glen stretch of the Los Gatos Creek Trail is one of 19 sites throughout the county where volunteer trash-removers will work this year.

"This is a really important event for us this year," Santa Clara Valley Water District spokesman Mike DiMarco said. "The timing is excellent."

Now that the rainy season is over, he said, it is the perfect time to pick up trash and other debris that washed into the county's creeks and creek beds.

The water district and several other local public and private agencies team together as the Creek Connections Action Group for this national cleanup event, as well as the coastal cleanup day, which DiMarco said is scheduled for Sept. 15, this year.

Volunteers at the Willow Glen site should meet at 9 a.m. at Blackford Elementary School (1970 Willow St. at Leigh Avenue between Stokes Street and Hamilton Avenue) at the bridge near the baseball field. The event is scheduled to end at noon. Volunteers should wear long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and sunscreen, DiMarco said. Bags and light refreshments will be provided.

For more information call Gerry Uenaka at 408.265.2607, ext. 2237, or visit www.cleanacreek.org and click on the National Cleanup Day link.
