Organizers expecting 50,000 at Campbell PruneFestival

    By Melissa Matchak

Live music, award-winning barbecue chefs and the "Super Prune" will help kick off the 23rd annual PruneFestival, held on May 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Campbell. The festival will offer its usual assortment of arts and crafts, food and drink, nonstop live musical entertainment on two stages and, of course, the Kiddie Korner.

Organizers say they expect about 50,000 to 60,000 people to attend the two-day festival.

The weekend's activities will begin with live saxophone music provided by Wes Anthony on May 19, at 10 a.m. on the west stage, followed by a Disney show performed by Kidz On Tour at 11:20 a.m. also on the west stage.

The Campbell-based Hitmen will perform pop and oldies tunes Saturday, from 1:45 to 5 p.m. on the main stage. Other musicians, including teen vocalist Robin Williams, local group Sage, country performer Sean Kennedy and variety group Fat Chance, will perform blues, folk, country, rock and more throughout the weekend. All performers are from the South Bay.

A wide variety of food will be available, including barbecued food made by barbecue chefs from Campbell and all over the county. In addition, pies, funnel cakes and other desserts, hot dogs, German cuisine and more will be prepared for hungry visitors.

Betty Deal, executive director of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce, said that for the past two or three years, the festival's food planning has been geared toward barbecue food to promote the outdoor atmosphere.

The PruneFestival, Deal said, is one of the Chamber's biggest fundraising events of the year and was created to bring visitors to downtown Campbell and to highlight local businesses.

For the festival, all streets between Campbell Avenue and Civic Center Drive, as well as between Third Street and the railroad tracks will be closed. Parking will be available at the garage at Orchard City Drive and First Street, as well as at the Campbell Community Center. Admission is free. For more information, call 408.378.6252.
