Police continue search for suspect in bank robbery
WG holdup is area's third in three weeks
By Kate Carter
Police are searching for a man who robbed a Lincoln Avenue bank at gunpoint on May 11. It was Willow Glen's third bank robbery in as many weeks.
San Jose police Lt. Rich Saito said the man entered the Bank of America at 1245 Lincoln Ave. just before 12:30 p.m. and approached a teller. He then displayed a gun and demanded cash. The teller followed the man's demands and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.
Bank employees called police as soon as the suspect left. Although police arrived at the scene two minutes later, Saito said police don't know if the suspect fled on foot or in a vehicle. About 20 officers responded to the call and searched for the suspect in surrounding neighborhoods.
Police also interviewed witnesses, looked for fingerprints and took a copy of the bank's security camera videotape. Officer George Duquite said fingerprints and videotape wouldn't be definitive evidence against a suspect, who could have held an account at the bank or changed his appearance.
A man arrested for robbing two other Willow Glen banks on April 23 and April 30, remains in custody and is not suspected in the May 11 robbery.
Duquite said the recent economic downturn could be a reason for the rash of bank robberies lately.
Police said the suspect is described as a black male, about 38-to-42 years old, stocky and about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He is also described as having short hair, a mustache and discolored skin above his right ear. He was wearing jeans and a multicolored Pendleton shirt.
Police are encouraging anyone who may have more information about the case to call the robbery unit at 408.277.4166, or call CrimeStoppers at 408.947.STOP to remain anonymous.
