St. Christopher's dons carnival trappings to celebrate summer

Many of summer's greatest ingredients--carnival rides, barbecue dinners, games, a raffle and live music--will be key elements of the weekend beginning Friday, June 5. That's when St. Christopher Church celebrates the season with its 40th annual parish festival and barbecue.

The planned events include bingo, children's games, a book booth and silent auction and rides for all ages, organizers said. The Joe Sharino Band will perform on Saturday night. Food includes a Saturday barbecue of tri-tip of beef, a Sunday breakfast and a Sunday barbecue chicken and ribs dinner.

The raffle is set for Sunday at 4 p.m. First prize is $5,000 cash, second prize a 26-inch color television and third prize a VCR. A $1 donation is requested for each raffle ticket, or $10 for a book of 12.

All proceeds benefit the parish community. Those interested may also obtain one free raffle ticket at the Monsignor Allen Center at 2278 Booksin Ave. during business hours.

The church is also located at 2278 Booksin. For more information, leave a message at 526-6069.

S.J. Real Estate Board plans move to the Glen

The San Jose Real Estate Board recently broke ground at its future location at 1525 Meridian Ave. in Willow Glen.

The board has occupied its current site on Fruitdale Avenue in San Jose since 1965, and the building was sold late last year, said public affairs director Rebecca Elliot. A 10,300-square-foot building is in the works for the Meridian location, and the board plans to occupy 5,800 square feet of it beginning in October.

The board provides legislative advocacy and other member services to approximately 4,500 Realtors and affiliates in Santa Clara County, Elliot said. It has just started a property rights protection program for individual homeowners, which includes keeping members updated on discussions of property rights issues taking place in local government.

"We're trying to get people more involved in the political process," Elliot said.
