Willow Glen frosh-sophers end year with tough loss

A season that got off to such a promising start came to a disappointing finish last week for the Willow Glen baseball team.

The Rams opened the year with back-to-back wins to get off to a 2-0 start in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

But Willow Glen could win two more games the rest of the way and finished up with two losses last week to complete a 4-14 league season.

The Rams were pounded 16-1 by Leland before losing 5-1 to Pioneer to finish off the year.

Sal Politi doubled to lead a five-hit attack for the Rams.

Sean Farrell went the distance to toss the five-hitter for the Mustangs. Danny Haakma singled and homered to drive in three runs for Pioneer. Greg Haskell and Jamel Choudry each singled and doubled for the Mustangs and Mike Ereno doubled.

The win left Pioneer 8-10 in the division and 11-14-1 for the year. The Rams ended up 6-18 overall.

Willow Glen had lost twice the week before, falling 9-5 to Santa Teresa in league action and 6-1 to Piedmont Hills in a nonleague game.

David Dudley and Eric Brugioni each homered and singled and Mark Arreola had three hits, but the Rams lost by four to the Saints.

Willow Glen had jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a couple of runs in the first, but Santa Teresa scored three in the second. The Rams tied it in the home half of the second, then took the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth.

The Rams took a 5-3 lead into the final inning, but the Saints rallied for six runs to break the game open.

Earlier in the week, Brugioni had singled and doubled and Ricky Jackman had two hits but the Rams lost a 6-1 nonleague decision to the Pirates.

Pete Watts slapped three hits and Alvin Rideau and Gilbert Maldonado added two each for the Rams. Adam Saucedo doubled for Willow Glen and Dave Macchi and Bobby Hobbs each singled. Hank Hagar knocked in a run with a perfect squeeze bunt.

But Pioneer snapped a 6-6 tie when Mike Wiens reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error.

Sean Hallihan drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the fourth for Pioneer. Jim Deprez and Travis Murdock had two hits apiece, Kevin Sparrer ripped a double and Brian Roy belted a run-scoring single to lead the Mustangs.

The loss left the Rams 6-12 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Mustangs finished 7-11.
