    Council approves Northrup rezoning

The city council approved a start to the annexation process for a 0.7-acre triangular parcel of land in northern Willow Glen that would permit the construction of eight attached single-family homes.

The council rezoned the site on Northrup Street and Interstate 280 from a county zone to San Jose planned-development land on May 15. The developer, Blackwell Brothers Development, had modified its proposal to add more on-site guest parking, widen the private street and a cul-de-sac allowing increased vehicular turnaround room.

The residences would have their own two-car garage and driveway and the site would include parking for eight guests. The six central units would be three stories high and the end units would be two stories high, each with a third-story loft. The proposal also includes nearly 10,000 square feet of public open space.

    Kmart General Plan amendment approved

The city council amended San Jose's General Plan on May 15, to construct a 250,000-square-foot office building on the corner of Southwest Expressway and Fruitdale Avenue.

The site, where the parking lot of an empty Kmart store is located, is across from a planned light rail station in the future Vasona Light Rail corridor. The site was previously zoned for mixed-use retail-residential and the council has already approved the planned development zoning of a portion of the location for a 451-unit residential development with ground-floor retail.

Developer John Vidovich, city officials and neighbors around the site have agreed it would be appropriate to use a 2.7-acre corner of the 14.6-acre site for commercial purposes. The General Plan amendment had originally been scheduled for council review last November but was postponed at District 6 City Councilman Ken Yeager's request to further study traffic and meet with neighbors, Yeager aide Rick Crosetti said.
