New Editor: Sheila Sanchez
'Resident' names new editor
Sheila Sanchez brings her award-winning experience to the job
Sheila Sanchez has been named editor of the Willow Glen Resident. She replaces Jeff Kearns who has accepted a position at Metro.
Sanchez, a journalism graduate from Brigham Young University, is a veteran reporter who covered education, politics and social issues at several daily newspapers--including The Salt Lake Tribune--in Utah. She also spent two years as a staff writer for La Opinion in Los Angeles, the largest Spanish-language daily newspaper in the United States.
She has won journalism awards for investigative reporting, spot news and news series. In 1995, the Center for Personal and Career Development at Utah Valley State College presented her with its Women Helping Women award for her coverage of women's issues.
In 1996, the Utah low-income women's advocacy group, JEDI (Justice, Economic Dignity and Independence for Women) honored her with its "Sabre of Light" award for Sanchez' "impassioned reporting" of issues affecting women in need.
According to Dale Bryant, executive editor of Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, "Sheila's experience and interests make her a perfect match for the Willow Glen community. Her passion for community journalism will serve her well in her new position."
"I'm honored to be working for the area's best community newspapers. I'm excited to be covering such a diverse and intelligent community as Willow Glen. I look forward to learning more about issues affecting the area," Sanchez said. "I'm always interested in what readers have to say and will have an open-door policy."
The mother of two daughters, Sanchez has been active in school and PTA activities. She, her husband and their daughters moved to the area six months ago and are residing in Cupertino.
