Dudley, Ferraro star for West Valley
By Dick Sparrer
There were many talented baseball players competing in the Coast Conference this past spring, but none were more talented than Adam Montarbo of West Valley Community College and Bryan Grochol of Cañada.
At least, that's the way the conference coaches saw things when they named the two baseball stars the most valuable players in the two divisions of the Coast Conference.
Montarbo was named the MVP in the conference's Southern Division, topping a list of six West Valley players on the dream team.
Pitcher Javier Andueza, catcher Jo Jo Quinata, infielder Melvin Souza, outfielder Donovan Minero and designated hitter David Dudley were Vikings named to the all-conference squad.
Winning all-conference honors for San Jose City College were pitcher Brad Husted, infielder Ryan Ceriani and outfielder Jeff Warney.
Grochol was selected as the MVP in the Northern Division of the Coast Conference.
De Anza Community College placed a pair of players on the all-conference list, with pitcher Jesse Mena and designated hitter Kevin Searles each winning post-season honors.
Vikings power to win
Home runs by Montarbo, Minero and Dudley sparked West Valley to a 13-12, 10-inning win over Merced to send the Vikings to the Northern California Regionals.
Minero had four hits to knock in three runs in the win over Merced, and Montarbo drove in three runs with three hits.
Dudley drove in four runs for the Vikings, and Quinata doubled home a pair. Gary Ferraro added three hits. Dudley and Ferraro are both Willow Glen graduates.
Valley lost 16-10 to the College of the Sequoias in the first round of the regionals, despite a four-hit day by Minero.
Minero doubled, tripled and singled twice to drive home five runs for the Vikings. Quinata and Dudley had two hits apiece, and Ferraro knocked in two runs.
Andueza was stuck with the pitching loss, dropping his record to 10-4.
The Vikings slipped to 30-16 for the year.
