Summer sports camps for kids

Here comes summer! So that means it's just about time for the kids to get out of school, then spend the better part of three months looking for something to do.

Well, there's no reason for kids to sit idly by through the summer months, not with the many summer sports camps that are available for youngsters.

Some upcoming area camps:

SJSU Baseball Camp

San Jose State University will host its 14th annual Summer Baseball Camp on July 13-17 and 20-24 at the San Jose State practice field under the direction of Spartan head coach Sam Piraro and his staff.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-15, and will include individual drills, group drills, daily scrimmages and individual camp evaluation. Areas to be covered include hitting, fielding, team aspects, individual positions, base running and teamwork.

Camp hours are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. daily, and the cost is $90 per player. All campers will receive a T-shirt, and there are daily camper awards. There will be individualized instruction and family discounts are available.

Field Hockey Camp

The Willow Glen field hockey program will host a summer field hockey camp for girls in grades 6-9. The camp is set for June 15-19, 9-11 a.m. daily, and the cost is $35 per player.

The camp will feature field hockey fundamentals and skills, and coaching will be provided by current Willow Glen High School varsity and junior varsity players. Field hockey equipment will be provided by the high school.

Girls' Basketball Camps

A series of girls' basketball camps will be held at Santa Clara University this summer with sessions starting June 6 through July 31. For more information, call Shaunice Warr at 554-4567.

Bellarmine Summer Camps

Bellarmine will offer camps in five different sports this summer: soccer, water polo, wrestling, football and basketball.

Football camps are being offered June 22-26 and and July 13-17 for boys entering grades six-nine and July 6-10 for boys entering grade nine. Sessions run 1:30-4:15 p.m. and the cost is $135.

The Bells will host several one-week soccer camps for girls and boys on the school's brand-new soccer field--June 22-26 for boys entering the ninth grade; July 6-10 and July 13-17 for boys and girls entering the sixth-ninth grades. Camps run 1:30- 4:15 p.m. and the cost is $125.

The water polo camp is open to boys and girls in the sixth through eighth grades, June 17-July 23. Sessions run 1:30-3:30 p.m. and the cost is $350.

Wrestling camps are set for June 22-26 and July 6-10 for boys entering the sixth through ninth grades. Sessions run 1- 3:15 p.m. and the cost is $95.

Basketball camps include: June 16-19--boys and girls entering the fifth and sixth grades, $120; June 22-26--boys entering the sixth-seventh grades, $140; June 29- July 2--boys and girls entering the sixth-eighth grades, $120; July 6-10--boys entering the seventh and eighth grades, $120. Sessions run from 1 to 4 p.m.

Santa Clara Soccer Camps

Santa Clara Soccer Camps will hold a series of camps for boys and girls, ages 6-17, at Santa Clara University: Girls' Residential--July 5-9, ages 9-13, field players and goalkeepers; July 12-16, ages 9-17, team camp; July 18-22, ages 14-17, field players and goalkeepers; Boys' Residential--July 24-28, ages 14-17, field players and goalkeepers; July 29-Aug. 2, ages 10-13, field players and goalkeepers; Girls' Day Camp--July 12-16, ages 9-13, 9 a.m.-noon; Girls' Shooting and Goalkeeper Camp--July 12-16, ages 14-17, 2-4:30 p.m.; Boys' Day Camp--Aug. 3-7, ages 6-16, 9 a.m.-noon; Boys' Strikers Camp--Aug. 3-7, ages 10-16, 1:30-4 p.m.; Boys' Goalkeeper Camp--Aug. 3-7, ages 10-16, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Santa Clara Soccer Camps also feature a Boys' and Girls' Full Day camp at the West Jordan Soccer Complex in Utah, June 29- July 3; the Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League Team Development Program at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex June 16- 19, June 22-26 and Aug. 10-14; and the Mt. Hamilton Youth Soccer League Camp at Cadwallader School, Aug. 3-7.
