Speak Out
Against the proposed countywide school tax
I am a senior citizen and have been a resident of San Jose all my life, which is 81 years. Upon reading the May 15 Willow Glen Resident story about education officials wanting better teacher salaries, I was really turned off.
The reporter who wrote the story, Jim Aquino, and the members of the so-called teachers association need to know that there are senior citizens in this great county who are barely making it to survive these days.
Social Security doesn't give us a hell of a lot. The rising prices of our HMOs are ridiculous. It costs me just as much as Aquino and these so-called educators, if not more, to exist today.
About Santa Clara County Office of Education Superintendent Colleen Wilcox's plan to implement a countywide tax to increase teacher salaries, I think she needs to have her head examined. If these so-called teachers can't survive on their present salaries, tell them to leave.

Hicks Avenue has been thoroughfare
In her May 22 Willow Glen Resident letter to the editor, Cathy Moilan makes some excellent points. Hicks Avenue is indeed a thoroughfare. I've lived here since 1935, and Hicks Avenue (what there was of it) was a thoroughfare then. Some things never change.
