The members of the Osprey Aquatics Swim Team may not dive for fish, but these swimmers race from one end of the pool to the other, in competition and for fun.
The Osprey swimmers are part of a year-round swim team that recently began practicing at Willow Glen High School. With the onset of summer also comes the start of the team's summer league, which runs from the end of May through the end of August.
All swimmers, ages 6-18, are welcome to join the summer team. Participants must swim from one end of the pool to the other without assistance, according to Kay Mascoli, a parent volunteer for the team. Summer team members don't have to be proficient in all four strokes the team practices.
The summer league also has championship meets one evening a week, during June and July, for those interested in the competition aspect of the swim team experience. Mascoli said there are four to five other summer leagues with which the Ospreys compete. The competitions are grouped by age.
The 5-year-old Osprey swim team moved its practices to Willow Glen High School from Almaden Valley Country Club, because the coach, Brian Bolster, also taught swimming and water polo at the high school and could arrange to have practices there. Mascoli also said that one-fourth of the team's families live in Willow Glen, which makes having the team at the high school more convenient.
Sign-ups for the Osprey summer league are now in progress. To sign up or for more information, call Shannon Mackin at 408.268.4379.
