The Rhythm Makers will be performing at Villa Montalvo
Styles include salsa, marches and ballads
Villa Montalvo plays host on June 12, to the premiere performance of The Rhythm Makers, a 16-member rhythm band of adult musicians--all of whom have developmental disabilities. The band has been playing since last fall and was created by a joint effort of Hope Rehabilitation Services and Villa Montalvo's Arts Education and Outreach Program. It is also funded by an Arts Builds Communities (ABC) grant from the Arts Council Silicon Valley.
Hope clients, as well as nondisabled volunteers with musical backgrounds, rehearse under the guidance of music director David Ladd Anderson. The band performs on professional percussion instruments and explores a variety of musical styles, including marches, pop tunes, salsa, jazz and ballads. Along with creating the rhythmic arrangements for their numbers, band members also sing and dance. For their Montalvo performance, they will be accompanied by professional musicians.
The Rhythm Makers' premiere performance takes place at 7 p.m. in Villa Montalvo's Carriage House Theatre, 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga. Everyone is welcome, and the event is free. Space is limited, however, so reservations are recommended. For more information, call Montalvo Arts Education and Outreach Director Lisa Ramirez at 408.961.5812.
