Good old boys not good for Willow Glen

I cannot imagine anything worse than electing a representative who is already on the mayor's "team," as suggested by the letter writer Karen Naegeli [May 17]. We need a range of ideas and opinions to be put forth by our City Council members, so that the most good can be done for the greatest number of people.

There should be no place for "good old boy" politics in San Jose, yet the Resident's own parent paper, Metro, refers to the mayor as "Yeager's City Hall benefactor." And just a short time after endorsing Yeager, Jim Spence was appointed by the mayor to an important downtown task force. A reward, perhaps?

Electing City Council representatives who are under the mayor's influence is not good for our city or for our neighborhoods. We need independent, broad-based and thoughtful leadership at City Hall. In November, I hope you will join me in voting for Kris Cunningham, someone who has already proven she will be for us--not for the political machine.

Avenue merchants make day a success

On behalf of the members of the Downtown San Jose Rotary Club, kudos to Chantal Lamers for her excellent article on our Career Days project with fifth-grade students at Washington Elementary School. Both Chantal and photographer Skye Dunlap were caught up in the students' excitement and enthusiasm for firsthand exposure to the inner workings of businesses as well as employment opportunities.

We are also grateful for the participation of Lincoln Avenue merchants--Casa Casa, Saratoga Plumbing, Willow Glen Jewelers, Starbucks, Le Boulanger, Aqui, Noah's Bagels, Washington Mutual Bank and Petroglyph--who took valuable time away from their busy jobs to inspire these youngsters to start thinking about their futures and the importance of education. It takes a village--Willow Glen that is--to make Rotary Career Days a success!

She likes Kris for City Council

There have been some recent letters regarding the possible reasoning behind Jim Spence's decision to endorse Ken Yeager instead of Kris Cunningham for City Council (District 6). I must add that I am also surprised, but do not intend to entertain opinions as to why Mr. Spence has made his decision.

However, I must say that as a former Willow Glen Neighborhood Association (WGNA) board member I fully support Kris Cunningham. My personal experience while working with Kris as president of WGNA makes the decision an easy one. Time after time, Kris provided just the right approach to solving problems and accomplishing goals.

Kris has been responsible for improving the lives of WG residents in many ways:

    1) Neighborhood/pedestrian safety, i.e., stop sign on Willow Street

    2) Reducing airport noise, i.e, worked with the city to adjust flight paths that are less disturbing to the neighborhood

    3) Willow Glen beautification, i.e., Meridian Avenue planting; neighborhood clean-ups

Kris knows how to get things done for Willow Glen; therefore, I believe that Kris Cunningham is the best candidate to represent District 6.
