The Willow Glen ResidentWillow Glen, Pioneer players named to all-league squadThere was no Central Coast Section playoff berth for either the Willow Glen or Pioneer baseball teams this spring. Neither the Rams nor the Mustangs could win enough games to qualify for a postseason berth. But, then, winning doesn't come easy for clubs competing in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The division is arguably among the three best leagues in all of the CCS, and only the top three Mt. Hamilton finishers win automatic playoff berths. Pioneer came close to claiming one of the three spots. The Mustangs posted an 8-10 record in the division to finish fourth, two games behind third-place Oak Grove. The Rams ended up 4-14 in the division and tied for sixth place. Still, both the Rams and Mustangs were well represented on the all-league team at the season's end, putting three players apiece on the all-league squad. David Dudley of Willow Glen joined Jamel Choudry and Danny Haakma of Pioneer on the all-league first team. Winning second-team honors were Chris Ferraro and Eric Brugioni of Willow Glen, and Mike Ereno of Pioneer. The Rams, who won their first two games of the season, finished the year with a 6-18 mark overall. The Mustangs ended up 11-14-1. It was almost a Xerox finish for the frosh-soph clubs at the two schools. Pioneer finished fourth in the division, with Willow Glen fifth. Four Mustangs earned places all-league frosh-soph team, including Sean Hallihan, Kevin Sparrer, Jim DePrez and Samir Ghia. Representing the Rams on the all-league squad were Dave Macchi, Gilbert Maldonado and Mike DeBono. Pioneer ended up 7-11 in the division and Willow Glen was 6-12.
