Two WG schools top distinguished list

San Jose Vice Mayor Frank Fiscalini presented awards to the principals and student body governments from Booksin Elementary and River Glen two-way bilingual immersion magnet schools at the May 30 San Jose City Council meeting.

The schools are two of seven in San Jose Unified School District that made California's Most Distinguished Schools list.

The California Department of Education released the names of 233 elementary schools across the state on April 10, after a long application process and school site visits from judges.

Fiscalini said he was proud of the students, teachers, principals, community and parents involved in the two schools.

Summer of Service for middle school kids

Put your little Glenite to work this summer. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade children can join the Children's Discovery Museum for its third annual Summer of Service. SOS provides youth the opportunity to volunteer throughout the community, learn about teamwork, help people in need and discover new friends.

Youth can volunteer to participate in one of four areas: Environment and Ecology [Green Team], Early Childhood and Education [Orange Team], Museum and Media Production [Purple Team], and Outreach and Community Partnership [Red Team].

Fridays are fun days, when all participiants take trips to the beach, an amusement park and other nearby places.

SOS is a two-week session from June 26 to July 7, Mondays through Thursdays, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Fridays, 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fees and registration are required. For more information, call Pam Cosce at 298.5437, ext. 242.
