Voight, Taheri lead Panthers to fourth at swim finals
By Dick Sparrer
There was no catching Homestead in the race for the Central Coast Section girls swimming championship. After all, the Mustangs won seven of the 12 events contested.
But even though the Presentation girls were kept off the top step of the victory stand at the CCS event, the Panthers still managed an outstanding finish at the finals, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Jenny Voight and Kiana Taheri.
Presentation finished a solid fourth at the finals, ending up with 177 1/2 points to finish behind Homestead (234), Palo Alto (227 1/2) and Mitty (187).
Both Voight and Taheri placed in the top three in two events. The two also helped the Panthers to a pair of top-three efforts in relay action.
Voight, a junior, was second in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.56, with teammate Taheri third in 57.59. Voight was also third in the 100 individual medley in 2:06.84. Taheri added a third in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.45.
The two teamed with Laura Wheeler and Melissa Miller for a second in the 200 free relay in 1:39.66 and a third in the 400 free relay in 3:34.69. What's more, all four swimmers will return next season for the Panthers. Wheeler is a sophomore and the other three swimmers are juniors.
Miller and freshman Nicole Taheri also placed in the championship finals for the Panthers.
Miller was fifth in both the 50 free in 24.80 and the 100 free in 53.31.
N. Taheri was sixth in the 500 free in 5:04.38. She was also fifth in the 100 fly consolation race in 1:00.63.
The foursome of N. Taheri, Carlene Takaki, Cathy Villarreal and Colleen Smith combined to finish eighth in the 200 medley relay consolation race, finishing in 1:59.25.
Sophomore diver Kristine Colyar finished 22nd overall, diving from the 1-meter board.
Eric Douat of Willow Glen dove to 22nd-place in the boys 1-meter diving event.
