    Outstanding students receive recognition

    By Melissa Matchak

Involvement in school and extracurricular activities, along with hard work and dedication, paid off for the 19 Willow Glen High School seniors who were awarded scholarships on June 7.

The Willow Glen High School PTA, according to parent Keith Hodgin, had $4,000 to give in scholarships this year. The 19 students who were selected received between $150 and $350 each. Students completed an application and a written essay, before an in-person interview with a panel of parents.

The applicants listed their school-related activities, such as student government, sports teams, music programs and other extracurricular activities. Also considered was the students' leadership activities and academic course work. Hodgin said most of the applicants were enrolled in several advanced placement courses. He said the panel took into consideration the difficulty of the students' classes and if they were challenging themselves.

All applicants were required to write a one-page paper on one of two topics: why students should attend Willow Glen High School, or about a person who had been inspirational for them during high school. The students were then invited to an interview during which they were asked questions by an panel of parents. The students' answers to such questions as what they felt was their most valuable high school experience and what they look forward to in college were taken into consideration.

Hodgin said the amount each student received varied, depending on their application, interview and the panel's impression of the student. He said the scholarships were not based on which college the students were planning to attend. Hodgin said all the students who completed the application and interview process were awarded a scholarship.

The scholarship winners were Colleen Wozny, Adam Saucedo, Loc Nguyen, Jose Macias, Nogc Tran, Nhan Vo, Dat Vuu, Kimberly Van Randall, Kara Buchanan, Meredith Carroll, Virginia Gonzales, Victoria Hernandez, Robert Hobbs, Huong Nguyen, Alex Nguyen, Huyen Tran, Lisa Woo, Lindsey Rovai and Stacey Santomauro.

Schools the students will attend in the fall include the University of California campuses at Davis, Berkeley and Santa Cruz, Santa Clara University, University of Rochester, University of the Pacific, Evergreen City College, Pepperdine University, Point Loma Nazarene and California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo.
