    No rest for college coaches

    Piraro, Cummins to host baseball camps

    By Dick Sparrer

    Sam Piraro and Mike Cummins were busy last spring with the rigors of the college baseball season.

    In fact, Piraro, the head coach at San Jose State University, and Cummins, the head coach at Santa Clara University, have been consumed most of this year with the task of leading their collegiate squads through rugged conference seasons.

    So you'd think summer would offer the two college coaches a chance to kick back and relax a bit as they look forward to the start of the school year in the fall.

    No chance.

    It's more baseball for both Piraro and Cummins as they host summer baseball camps for youth on their college diamonds.

    The camps are just two of the many area sports camps in the area for young people:

    San Jose State Baseball Camp

    Fundamentals of the game of baseball will be stressed when San Jose State University baseball coach Sam Piraro hosts the annual San Jose State Baseball Summer Camps.

    Piraro and his coaching staff will join with area high school and junior college coaches as instructors at the camps that will be conducted on the San Jose State practice fields.

    The camps are open to players ages 6-16, with special hitting and pitching camps slated for players ages 12-17 in later sessions. All campers receive a T-shirt, and there will be daily scrimmages and group drills. There will also be player evaluations and special awards. Sessions include:

    * July 19-23--10 a.m.-1 p.m., for ages 6-16, $90 per camper;

    * July 26-30--10 a.m.-1 p.m., for ages 6-16, $90 per camper;

    * Aug. 2-6--11 a.m.-1 p.m., pitching camp for players ages 12-17, $125 per camper; 2-4 p.m., hitting camp for players ages 12-17, $125 per camper (or attend both sessions for $200).

    For more information, call 924-1467 or 924-1255.

    Camps are open to players ages 9-16 and feature individualized instruction in defense, base running, sliding and hitting. There will be video analysis of each player, and each player will receive a camp T-shirt and be eligible for prizes in camp contests.

    Sessions include:

    * July 5-9--9 a.m.-noon, basic fundamentals, hitting; 1-2:30 p.m., pitching only;

    * July 19-23--9-10:15 a.m., hitting only; 10:30-11:45 a.m., hitting only.
