District plans a June 29 public hearing about Proposition 227

One of California's most controversial topics these days, the issue of bilingual education, was certainly not settled by the June 2 passage of Proposition 227.

The state ballot initiative, which sought to ban bilingual education in schools, is already facing legal challenges--and waiver applications from many school districts. The members of the San Jose Unified School District Board are holding a public hearing on Monday, June 29, to gather input on whether the district should apply for such a waiver.

The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the district administration building at 855 Lenzen Ave. in San Jose. Following the public hearing, the board will hold an open special session to take action on the issue.

District officials are also scheduled to appear before the state Board of Education in July to request a waiver.

District superintendent Linda Murray has said that the district might consider filing a legal challenge to 227, but officials prefer to exhaust administrative remedies first.
