Prune roses and eat ice cream at gardens

The Guadalupe River Park and Gardens is inviting the public to help prune the rose bushes at its San Jose Heritage Rose Garden next month.

The park, at Taylor and Spring streets, has a diverse collection of roses with more than 3,700 rose varieties, but after blooming in early spring the dead blooms need to be removed so they will blossom again sooner.

"We want to have continuous blooms," education coordinator Kary Wilson said. "The faster you get them off there, the faster the plant wants to make a new bloom."

Adults are encouraged to bring clippers and gloves on July 10, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to be guided by volunteer experts. Activities from the park's Water Wizard Day Camp will also be provided for children between 7 and 11, and everyone will be treated to ice cream sundaes.

For more information about the rose pruning and to sign up, call Lucy Perez at 408.298.7657.
