Police aren't sure why 911 service went down
San Jose police lost phone service at the department's communications center last week, but officials say dispatchers didn't miss any calls because a backup system took over as soon as the outage happened.
The center lost phone service at 5:30 a.m. on June 21, affecting 911, 311 and seven-digit emergency lines. Police report that the alternative 911 system immediately took over.
The primary 911 system wasn't back in service until 2:30 p.m. that day. Police don't believe that any emergency calls were missed. However, it took several hours to restore 311 service and the department's seven-digit emergency line (277-8911).
The San Jose Fire Department also temporarily lost phone service. The incident is the second time this month that the city has lost 911 service.
According to police spokesperson Rubens Dalaison, department officials are still waiting for reports to determine why the system went down.
Questions may be addressed to Communication Manager Cameron Smith at 408.277.5176.

Council OKs budget on a close vote
The San Jose City Council passed its 2000/2001 budget on June 20, with a 6-5 vote. Voting against the budget were council members Linda LeZotte, Charlotte Powers, Alice Woody, Manny Diaz and Margie Matthews.
The same council members also voted on June 13, against Mayor Ron Gonzales' proposal to spend settlement funds primarily on seniors, education and anti-tobacco programs.
The five rallied to use a portion the city tobacco settlement money to fund citywide health care for children.
Diaz said he agreed with all aspects of the budget except for the tobacco settlement portion. Matthews said she voted against the budget because she wanted the council to help fund health care for San Jose's children.

City call center should be open early next year
Starting in January, San Jose residents will be able to get answers from City Hall 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
City officials are working on a Call Center/Customer Service center to make City Hall more accessible to its residents. After the lobby in City Hall is remodeled, the new center will be located there.
City staff will be trained to answer most calls by entering keyword queries into a computer-based system. Call center representatives will also respond to email and fax inquiries. The goal of the center is to return calls and get information in a timely matter.
