From Series to Camp for Spartans

Broncos, former Giant will also host local summer baseball camps

    By Dick Sparrer

The high school season may be over, and youth baseball seasons may be winding down to all-star play. But there is still plenty of baseball for young people this summer, thanks to a series of local summer camps.

San Jose State University coach Sam Piraro returns to the diamond, fresh off of an appearance at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. And Santa Clara University head coach Mike Cummins will be busy this summer with a camp at the Mission campus.

Former San Francisco Giants hurler Roger Samuels will also be back on the diamond when he hosts the 10th annual Camp With the Pros.

    Spartan Camps

San Jose State University baseball coach Sam Piraro will direct the annual Spartan summer baseball camp for players ages 6-17 in July at the Spartan practice field across from Kelly Park and Municipal Stadium.

    The schedule includes:

Session I, July 10-14-- comprehensive camp, players ages 6-16, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, cost $95 per camper.

    Session II, July 17-21-- pitching camp, ages 9-12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., $125; and hitting camp, ages 12-17, 2-4 p.m., $125 (both sessions $200).

    Session III, July 24-28-- comprehensive camp, ages 6-16, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., $95.

    Session IV, July 31-Aug. 4-- pitching camp, ages 13-17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., $125; and hitting camp, ages 12-17, 2-4 p.m., $125 (both sessions $200).

The camps, run by Piraro with the help of assistants Doug Thurman and Dean Madsen and other area high school and junior college coaches, stress fundamentals.

    SCU Baseball School

The annual Santa Clara Baseball School, under the direction of Santa Clara University baseball coaches Mike Cummins and Lou Lucas, returns to the mission campus for another summer.

Sessions for boys ages 9-16 are slated for July 17-21 and July 24-28.

Clinics in basic fundamentals and hitting will be held July 17-21, 9 a.m.-noon, each day. The cost is $110 per player. Pitching clinics will held on the same dates, 1-2:30 p.m. each day, and the cost is $60 per player.

Hitting clinics are slated during the week of July 24-28, 9-10:15 a.m. and 10:30-11:45 a.m. each day. The cost is $60 per player for either of the morning sessions.

The school features individualized instruction in defense, base running, sliding and hitting, a pitching machine, video analysis, and a radar gun. Campers will receive a T-shirt, and Bronco caps will be awarded to contest winners.

Cummins, the head coach for the Broncos, and Lucas are both former Santa Clara University players. They have a combined 40 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.

Santa Clara is the home of the three-time West Coast Conference champion Broncos. The school has produced 21 All-Americans.

For more information on the school, call 408.554.4680 or 408.267.3831.

    Camp with the Pros

The 10th annual Camp With the Pros, a summer baseball camp for players ages 7-12, returns to the Santa Clara Valley in July and August.

Camp sessions will be held July 24-28 at Blackford High School and Aug. 7-11 at De Anza Park in San Jose. Hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, and camp fees are $109 per session.

Camp director is Roger Samuels, a former Branham High School and Santa Clara University star who went on to pitch for the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates. Director of instruction is Mark Cummins, a former Santa Clara University infielder who went on to play professional baseball and has worked as the head baseball coach at Live Oak High School for the past 15 years.

The camp will feature instruction in fundamentals, sportsmanship and self-discipline in a small group atmosphere.

For more information, call Samuels at 408.264.9233.
