John Muir is selected as Broadway's new home
School programs will play 'musical chairs' over next twelve months
By Jessica Lyons
Broadway High's search for a new home is nearing completion, as San Jose Unified School District Superintendent Linda Murray says she will recommend relocating the district's continuation high school to property on the grounds of John Muir Middle School.
"My recommendation will be for the Board to accept the task force recommendation and proceed with all that needs to be done to relocate Broadway to John Muir," Murray said.
The final recommendation comes after months of searching for a new location for Broadway, an alternative high school for students who drop out of San Jose Unified School District high schools. At one point, the list of possible sites reached nearly a dozen, including existing schools and district-owned land, as well as city property.
At this point, however, the back portion of John Muir Middle School looks most desirable, say district officials, citing the school's central location, proximity to public transportation and size.
"It's a strong recommendation," Murray says, "It's a large site, it can be separated from the rest of the campus, it's a cost-effective location, and it can accommodate the entire Broadway program," Murray says.
A public hearing seeking community input on the proposed move will be held on July 1. Directly following the public hearing, the Board of Education is scheduled to take action.
"This should not be a unilateral decision of the San Jose Unified School District," Murray says. "It should be looked at from the standpoint of members of our parent community, from teachers at Broadway, students who go to Broadway and from the perspective of area neighbors."
Pending approval by the Board of Education, Broadway students and teachers could move into portable classrooms on the John Muir site as early as the spring of 2000.
"That would be our goal," says Rod Sprecher, director of general services for the district.
River Glen Elementary's relocation also hinges on Broadway's new home. After Broadway moves, the district will renovate the building it had been using. The renovated site will then accommodate River Glen's bilingual program. A new school will be built at the old site. All of this is scheduled to happen in less than 12 months.
A public hearing on the relocation will be held 6:30 p.m., July 1 at the District Administration Building, 855 Lenzen Ave.
