Big dreams in the wild West

A trip to the skating rink

More money should go to children, and less to already top-heavy administration

I recently received a slick 15-page brochure of San Jose Unified's accomplishments. I noticed on page 15 that the district receives over $200 million a year but spends 83 percent, or $166 million of that amount, on salaries and benefits for employees and administration. That leaves only $34 million for the 32,000 children in the district. That breaks down to only $1,000 per child.

I noticed that the district spends 5 percent on books and supplies; that is only $10 million for all 43 schools. How much of the supply money goes to the administration account? If the district were a regular business, they would be out of business for giving too much in salary and benefits to employees and themselves especially and not enough for our children. Is this why our children cannot have recent textbooks and receive photocopies for their homework assignments?

I will always be an advocate for children. More money needs to go for sports, music, drama, textbooks and technology. Not to top-heavy administration so that they can work in a $10 million mansion with their own cafeteria and provide themselves with significant other benefits and eating up 83 percent of every dollar that goes to the district, while our children are doing without.
