College baseball coaches host camps

College head baseball coaches Sam Piraro of San Jose State University and Mike Cummins of Santa Clara University will each host camps for youth this summer.

Piraro and his staff will host the 14th annual Summer Baseball Camp on July 13-17 and 20-24 at the San Jose State practice field.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-15, and will include individual drills, group drills, daily scrimmages and individual camp evaluation. Areas to be covered include hitting, fielding, team aspects, individual positions, base-running and teamwork.

Camp hours are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. daily, and the cost is $90 per player. All campers will receive a T-shirt, and there are daily camper awards. There will be individualized instruction and family discounts are available.

The annual Santa Clara Baseball School returns to Santa Clara University this summer, under the direction of Broncos head coach Cummins and former Santa Clara player and coach Lou Lucas.

Remaining camp sessions include: Session II-- July 6-10, hitting only, 9-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11:45 a.m,, $60; and Session III-- July 20-24, basic fundamentals and hitting, 9 a.m.-noon, $110, and pitching only, 1-2:30 p.m., $60.

The school features individualized instruction in playing defense, base-running, sliding and hitting. Each camper receives a camp T-shirt.

Joining Cummins and Lucas on the camp staff this summer will be Santa Clara pitching coach Greg Gohr, a former Santa Clara mound star who spent four years in the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers and Anaheim Angels.

Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Roger Samuels, meanwhile, will host South Bay Baseball's annual Camp With the Pros for all players, ages 7-12.

Camps are set for July 20-24 at the old Blackford High School campus, 3800 Blackford Ave., and Aug. 3-7 at John Muir Middle School, 1260 Branham Lane. The cost is $99 per player, but group rates are available. Players are grouped by age and skill level.

Samuels, a former pitcher for the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates, is the camp director and Mark Cummins, a former Santa Clara University and professional infielder who has been the head baseball coach at Live Oak for the past 13 years, is the director of instruction.
