Matthews drops council for L.A. parks position

District 4 San Jose City Council member Margie Matthews announced on June 26, that she will resign from the council effective July 31. Matthews has served as a volunteer, a mayor's policy advisor and a council member over the last 18 years. She's accepted the position of Executive Officer in the Department of Recreation and Parks for the city of Los Angeles.

Matthews' term as council member would have ended in December. District 4 voters (Berryessa, Alviso, Orchard, and North San Jose) will elect Karen Chu or Chuck Reed to the empty seat in the November election.

She's worked on issues such as the preservation of the Berryessa foothills, the Library Community Center and the Future Youth Center. She has also worked toward improving transportation, stopping the sale of junk guns and establishing a 311 nonemergency police number.

"Margie Matthews has effectively served the people of San Jose with integrity and compassion for more than 18 years. And she has made significant contributions to improve the quality of life in our community and neighborhoods," Mayor Ron Gonzales said.
