Matthews drops council for L.A. parks position
District 4 San Jose City Council member Margie Matthews announced on June 26, that she will resign from the council effective July 31. Matthews has served as a volunteer, a mayor's policy advisor and a council member over the last 18 years. She's accepted the position of Executive Officer in the Department of Recreation and Parks for the city of Los Angeles.
Matthews' term as council member would have ended in December. District 4 voters (Berryessa, Alviso, Orchard, and North San Jose) will elect Karen Chu or Chuck Reed to the empty seat in the November election.
She's worked on issues such as the preservation of the Berryessa foothills, the Library Community Center and the Future Youth Center. She has also worked toward improving transportation, stopping the sale of junk guns and establishing a 311 nonemergency police number.
"Margie Matthews has effectively served the people of San Jose with integrity and compassion for more than 18 years. And she has made significant contributions to improve the quality of life in our community and neighborhoods," Mayor Ron Gonzales said.

Planning Commission delays hotel hearing
The San Jose Planning Commission has postponed a June 28 hearing on building permits for La Concha Inn and Spa near the corner of Coe and Lincoln avenues. The meeting date was rescheduled to July 12, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers. The hearing date and time is subject to change. Call the planning commission at 408.277.4576 to confirm hearing times.

Volunteers wanted at Rape Crisis Center
The YWCA Rape Crisis Center is looking for volunteers for its 24-hour crisis line.
The free community service provides counseling, support and advocacy to assault victims and their families, as well as information and referrals. Volunteers must complete a 40-hour state certification training program before beginning. The training will begin on Monday, September 11.

Council takes a break, but City Hall doesn't
Everyone needs a vacation now and then, even San Jose City Council members. The council will suspend meetings throughout July, although City Hall will continue operating during its normal business hours. Council will be back in session on Aug. 1, at 1:30 p.m.

Library will hold sale to benefit WG branch
The Willow Glen branch of the San Jose Public Library is holding book and bake sale on July 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1157 Minnesota Ave. Sponsored by Friends of the Willow Glen Library, all proceeds from used books and homemade goodie sales will benefit the Willow Glen Branch Library.
