    Cunningham uses paper for attacks

I am very disappointed by the personal attacks that Kris Cunningham's campaign is using against Ken Yeager. As is evident by letters in past issues of The Resident, her campaign has chosen to use your newspaper as a stomping ground for negative campaigning. The Cunningham campaign should stick to the issues. There is no room for negative campaigning in Willow Glen.

I support Ken Yeager because he is a distinguished educator, neighborhood activist and community leader. He has the endorsement of Mayor Ron Gonzales, council member John Diquisto, former candidate and Willow Glen resident Jim Spence, and the Firefighters and the Police Officers' Association. Ken is the most qualified candidate to best represent our neighborhoods on the city council.

Yeager on the side of special interest groups

Janet Gray Hayes' support of Ken Yeager is no surprise. They are Rose Garden neighbors and apparently they were both against Measure O. However, the vast majority of District 6 residents, including Kris Cunningham, supported the Mayor's Plan and soundly rejected Measure O at the ballot box.

As I recall, even the authors of the proposition asked us to vote down Measure O because the new plan was better. If the people did not want measure O, how does this make Yeager, as Janet Gray Hayes contends, "a forceful advocate for the needs of all neighborhoods"?

It seems he is on the side of a special interest group that opposes airport expansion even at the expense of a good transportation plan for those of us who use the airport regularly.

'Navigating the Ave.' needed more for kids

I just read with interest how the Willow Glen Business and Professional Association is preparing for the Founder's Day get together based on the quirks and successes of Dancin' on the Avenue. Because of the big crowd, this event could have been mistaken for "Navigating the Avenue." Long lines at the beer and wine ticket booths draped directly across Lincoln caused the blockage of simply walking down the avenue for families with small children and others. If there is to be even more beer and wine ticket booths at the Founder's Day celebration, my suggestion to this committee is to locate these booths parallel to Lincoln Avenue so that the long lines do not interfere with people attempting to walk down Lincoln. Thus, the long lines would be on the sidewalks out of the walking public's way.

Also, while the committee is busy planning Founder's Day, please plan some stuff for the kids to take part in for that day as has been done in the past. While beer and wine and commemorative glasses do bring in big bucks to offset costs, these events are supposed to play to the entire community.

While my 3-year-old enjoyed the music of Joe Sharino and the free popsicle given away by Cisco Systems, another clown blowing up animal balloons and maybe a few events directed to small kids would have been nice. Hopefully, the WGBPA will take these suggestions into consideration when planning the Founder's Day event, making it an event for the entire community, including families with small children who do happen to attend these events.

Yeager is just giving lip service to Lenzen

My neighbors and I received a letter from District 6 candidate Ken Yeager that so appalled us we spent out Memorial Day weekend preparing and distributing a letter to other Rose Garden neighborhood residents expressing our questions of Mr. Yeager's motives, which we believe are to maintain his endorsements and to become an elected official at the expense of our neighborhood.

Ken Yeager makes claims that he has been speaking out against and is working to stop the Caltrain Lenzen Maintenance Facility. However, he only sent a letter to the VTA in November 1999 and spoke in support of mitigation to the [Caltrain] JPB on May 4. At the JPB meeting he did not speak out demanding an EIR nor did he speak in opposition to the project. It would have been fine to support mitigations. However, he told a neighbor that he did not believe mitigations would work!

Ken Yeager is only providing lip service. He made a written statement to the Caltrain Task Force that he has been working to block this project. Our question to him is: What has he been doing? Has his work all been behind the scenes? Where has he been speaking, in his living room? We certainly have not seen any action on his part.

Candidate Kris Cunningham, on the other hand, has been active. She has spoken out in public against the project to the VTA, JPB and city council. She has attended neighborhood association and Task Force meetings and she has personally flyered the neighborhood, providing information about the Caltrain maintenance yard. She is not providing lip service! She is supporting the neighborhood.

Society must share blame for crimes

The death penalty is under discussion. Terrible crimes are committed, and we cry out for the extreme penalty. But society has a share in the responsibility for the crime.

We tolerate environments for children which are harsh both physically and psychologically. We neglect the efforts of the children and the parents to change the environment. We do not study or correct the provocations which lead people to early criminality; we do not remedy the known bad conditions; and we inadequately discipline early bad behavior. Our help is insufficient.

For our own selfish reasons, we must treat more wisely unfortunate children and the people in our jails. We have failed our responsibility to aid one another, to study our criminal nature, and so we are partly responsible for crime. A moderate amount of our time and money will pay off in crime reduction, a healthier society, and in a better conscience for ourselves.
