The Willow Glen ResidentAround The GlenPac Bell grants $106k to county nonprofit groups Pacific Bell on June 24 announced the awarding of $106,000 in grant moneys to 26 health, human care and cultural agencies in the county. The grants are being distributed through United Way of Santa Clara County. "The agencies selected for support all provide a much-needed range of services to improve quality of life for individuals and families," said Mark Walker, executive director for Pacific Bell's South Bay region. Agencies awarded grants serve clients from a range of ethnic groups living in the area, in cities from Palo Alto to Gilroy. Of these 26 agencies, 17 serve clients in San Jose. Grant recipients include the San Juan Bautista Child Development Center, which will use the funds to provide day-care services for low-income families with mildly ill children; Project HIRED's "Hire Temps" program, which provides temporary employment opportunities for disabled people; the American Red Cross for its disaster-relief and homelessness-prevention program for Hispanics in San Jose; the Mexican Heritage Corporation for its seventh annual San Jose International Mariachi Festival; and Asian Americans for Community Involvement for Project PLUS, a gang- and drug-prevention program for youth. --Anne Gelhaus
