Airport committee needs more community volunteers

City has openings on other boards and commissions

By Anne Gelhaus

The city of San Jose is looking for volunteers to fill slots on numerous committees and commissions. San Jose residents interested in serving on the Arts Commission, the Historic Landmarks Commission or the CDBG Steering Committee have until Wednesday, July 22, to apply. For more information, call the city clerk's office at 277-4424.

The application deadline for the new Airport Noise Monitoring Committee and for two vacancies on the Campaign Finance Review and Ethics Board is Friday, July 24.

The airport committee is being formed to review aircraft operations that don't comply with the time-of-day operational restrictions, or "curfew," laid out in the city's Airport Noise Control Program. The committee will issue quarterly reports to the City Council and make recommendations to the city attorney in instances when an individual aircraft operator racks up excessive curfew violations.

The city is seeking a representative of the San Jose business community to serve on the committee, as well as two community members who live near San Jose International Airport. Those selected as committee members will serve open-ended terms.

Other slots on the committee will be filled by two planning commissioners, one member of the Airport Commission and one airline representative.

The committee will meet quarterly. For more information, call committee staff at the airport at 277-5366.

Vacancies on the ethics board are for one unexpired term ending March 1, 2000, and one four-year term ending March 1, 2002. The board monitors compliance with San Jose's campaign and ethics ordinances.

The ethics board is made up of five members who are appointed by no less than a two-thirds vote of the City Council. Board members must be registered to vote in San Jose and must demonstrate familiarity and experience with campaign laws.

While serving on the ethics board, members may not hold any other public office nor publicly endorse or campaign on behalf of any candidate for city office. Board members may not be city employees or have any direct or substantial financial interest in city business.

For information or applications, call the city clerk's office at 277-4424.
