Federal funding helps to prevent flooding
The House of Representatives last month approved nearly $17 million to prevent flooding along the Guadalupe River and other area waterways.
The federal money will contribute to local flood control projects already underway, including those in areas of eastern Willow Glen near the river that have flooded in past years. The funds will also help efforts to build trails and maintain the ecology along the watersheds.
Efforts by Reps. Mike Honda and Zoe Lofgren, who represent areas of Willow Glen, asked for the federal funding as part of a nearly $24 billion bill for the 2002 fiscal year budget beginning in October, Honda Legislative Director Bob Sakaniwa said. The money won't be assured until both the Senate and the House have agreed upon a version of the bill and President George W. Bush has signed it into law this fall, he said.
