WG girl takes lead role
Chantelle Soutas, 13, of Willow Glen, plays the athletic pea-detecting princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, in the upcoming Children's Musical Theatre San Jose Rising Star production of Once Upon a Mattress.
The play will be shown July 19-22 at the Montgomery Theatre in downtown San Jose.
The musical claims to be sophisticated, playful and brimming with fun, satire and brilliant tunes. Soutas has the lead role in the production.
Based by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in New York on May 11, 1959, and played for 59 weeks. A major Broadway revival of the production took place late in 1996, starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
In 1997 the show received a Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. The musical comedy was presented on CBS-TV, in June 1964, starring Carol Burnett, re-enacting her stage role of Princess Winnifred, and Ken Berry as Prince Dauntless.
Theater alumnus, Doug Santana directs a cast of more than 165 performers, ages 10-14, with musical direction by Jeff Amorosa, vocal direction by Micki Sever and choreography by Jennifer Royse.
