It's a pirate's life for me

    Yeager helped make neighborhood safer

I am the mother of two small children and a runner, so I am aware of and care very much about pedestrian safety. I wanted to address how to slow down traffic in my neighborhood, and Ken Yeager was very responsive, and supportive throughout the entire process.

Eight months ago, I called Ken, even though I had never met him. I wanted to see if he had any ideas on how to get a traffic signal installed at Hedding and Dana, near where I live. My family, my neighbors and I wanted to be able to cross safely at Hedding and Dana to access the schools, the library, park and grocery store. Until two years ago, there had been a crosswalk at this intersection for the last 20 years. I asked Ken what the best way was to go about starting a petition and he offered to help guide me through the process and to participate in collecting signatures. He and I spent several days gathering over 100 signatures. This led to a study being conducted by the City.

After two community meetings, staff from Streets and Traffic told the neighborhood residents that while a traffic signal wasn't warranted, a crosswalk was. Before school starts this September a crosswalk, pedestrian median, handicap ramps, and signage will be installed to make our trips across Hedding and Dana safer.

This was a great victory for our neighborhood. I want to thank Ken Yeager for all his work and his encouragement to make it happen.
