AARP meeting will explain the state lawmaking process

From sitting in committee to languishing on the governor's desk, bills introduced in the state Legislature go through a seemingly labyrinthine process to get on the law books. Peter Szego, a legislator for the American Association of Retired Persons, will describe "How a Bill Becomes Law" at the July 27 meeting of the Willow Glen AARP chapter.

Szego, who worked as chief of staff for several state Senate policy committees, is currently a member of the AARP State Legislative Committee and National Legislative Council. At the meeting, he will go through all the steps a bill takes before the governor signs it into law, delving into both the formal legal process and the politics of legislative action. "An understanding of how a bill becomes law is essential to effective grassroots lobbying by seniors and other citizens," Szego says.

Also on the meeting's agenda is a review by AARP's Wally Ebright of the current national debate on possible changes to Social Security and Medicare.

The AARP meeting is set for July 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Willows Senior Center, 2175 Lincoln Ave. The meeting is free and open to the public.
