The Willow Glen ResidentLettersWGNA member circulates idea for blood drive Being a regular blood-platelet donor and member of the Willow Glen Neighborhood Association (WGNA), I had an idea that perhaps the Association could co-sponsor a blood drive, so I suggested it recently. For the other co-sponsor, I was going to approach the church where the association has its board and general meetings. Date-wise, I was going to propose winter, so as not to compete with business association/farmers market drives. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for the reaction I got. Instead of asking how this idea could be turned into reality, the question was immediately posed as to whether or not this was consistent with the association's purpose. Yes, the association's prime purpose is land-use issues, but haven't there been other Association activities--graffiti paint-outs, tree plantings, etc.--that aren't exactly land-use issues? If the association can do these activities, why would it balk at a blood drive? Or is the problem that this is being proposed by just a member instead of an association board member? Looks to me that it might be. With this in mind, I must reluctantly conclude that the time is right for the formation of a third (fourth if you count the Beautification Project) major Willow Glen organization. This one would be dedicated to bringing all elements of the community together--apartment dwellers and other renters, business owners and of course, homeowners, and would be done through positive, nonpolitical activities such as blood drives, picnics, cleanup projects, etc.--in short, whatever activities the group would want. As for my blood drive idea. Many people I've spoken with say that given the initial cool reaction to it, that it is not worth pursuing through WGNA. I strongly agree and no longer wish to pursue this through them. If another area group would be interested in working with me on a blood drive, feel free to contact me (I'm listed in the phone book under J.E. Cooley).
June E. Cooley Bouquets to planners of Daisy Patch party I would like to have credit placed where credit's due. In reference to "Daisy Patch owners host retirement bash" (July 1), I would like to acknowledge Dave Cayton for planning and hosting the party and Matt and Susan Cullen of the Willow Glen Roasting Company for use of their facility. Also helping were Ann Freese of High in the Sky, Laura Augusta of L'Daisy Patch and Frances Clerico. Lynette and I will continue to be strong supporters of Willow Glen and want to thank the community again for our successful 22 years at The Daisy Patch.
