Water District Grants
The Santa Clara Valley Water District is offering grants to community groups trying to maintain the county's waterways.
This is a pilot year for the district's Grant-in-Aid Program, which has $250,000 to give away. Approximately $200,000 will be given to various grant proposals between $5,000 and $25,000; approximately $50,000 will be given to proposals for $5,000 and less. The grants will be given to support local efforts to maintain and restore the watershed and protect water resources.
Applications for the one-year grants are due Aug. 17 and are available on the district's website, www.heynoah.com, or by calling Karna Carlson at 408.265.2600.

Participants wanted
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is looking for walkers to participate in its upcoming fundraiser.
The nonprofit organizations' nationwide Light the Night Walk will take place Sept. 14 at downtown San Jose's Cesar Chavez Plaza, but event organizers are inviting individual and group participants to begin raising money now. The money will go to support local programs for cancer patients and their families as well as efforts to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.
Walkers who raise more than $25 will carry illuminated balloons on the three-mile evening walk. Cancer survivors will carry white balloons and other participants will carry red balloons.

Educational Bus Trip
The Guadalupe River Park and Gardens Corporation is sponsoring a bus trip to local spots involved in the water reclamation cycle.
The Sept. 6 trip will visit the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant, the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens' Demonstration Recycled Water Garden.
The trip will leave from the Garden Center, 715 Spring St., at 8:15 a.m. and will return by 2:30 p.m. The trip costs $20 for corporation members and $25 for nonmembers. For more information or to reserve a space, call Kary Wilson, 408.298.7657.
