Kyle Hansen
New WG Eagle Scout
By Karen Kabiling
Willow Glen resident Kyle Hansen, a graduate of Pioneer High School and a member of Troop 225, has recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts.
To earn the rank, the 18-year-old Hansen had to fulfill requirements in leadership, service and outdoor skills.
He now joins the likes of other famous Eagle Scouts such as Gerald Ford, Bill Bradley and Steven Spielberg.
Hansen's Eagle Scout project was inspired by "an ugly chain-linked fence" that he and many other Pioneer High School students would pass by on their way to school. Hansen decided he wanted to change that.
He worked with school adviser Mike Stark to paint panels with the theme of a "service to the community" to create a mural for the campus.
When Hansen began his project, a few panels were already hung, but with his effort, the mural has grown to more than 30 panels when other Boy Scouts followed his example.
Not only did he fulfill the required 100 hours of service, but he surpassed the requirement with more than 200 hours.
"I've had a lot of fun doing it and learned about everything and myself," Hansen says. "I don't care about the recognition."
Hansen confesses that it wasn't until his junior year that he became involved in numerous activities, nonetheless his hard work has truly paid off.
"When you work hard at something, you get a profit," he says. "It helps the community so much."
His project was another addition to his list of achievements.
His mother, Linda, has always encouraged her son with whatever interested him.
"We're very proud of him," Linda says. "He's always excelled at everything he's tried and always done everything well."
And she isn't the only one who has noticed.
George Devine, the community service specialist for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church), says Hansen's lifetime membership in the church has molded him to become the person he is today.
"His character has been molded by the church and the scout program," Devine says. "I was really impressed by his mentoring younger students."
Hansen assists his father, Bryce, the bishop of the Cherry Glen Ward of the LDS Church, in a young men's peer group, sings in the choir and will participate in the LDS Oakland Temple Pageant as a part of the balcony chorus. The pageant is a recreation of Mormon history.
"He's just an all-around solid, young man," Devine says.
And that's not all.
Last year, Hansen was heavily involved with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition's Clean Streams Clean Bay project, which led him to an internship with the coalition this summer one day a week.
During the other four days of the week, Hansen works as an administrative assistant at Alzeta Corporation.
