Lincoln Glen wins district, section title

It's a little hot in Stockton this week

    By Dick Sparrer

Then, that's nothing new for the San Joaquin Valley city at this time of year. What is different, though, is that the heat is rising in Stockton because a hot team from Willow Glen is spending the week there in its quest for the junior division championship in the Division II tournament.

The Lincoln Glen Little League junior all-stars (ages 13-14) won district and sectional championships to earn the trip to Stockton, and now they have their sights set on the divisional crown.

Lincoln Glen rolled through the Section 5 tournament with three straight wins, beating Gilroy 18-1, Oak Ridge 9-1 and Gilroy 7-5 in the championship game.

Kevin Becker was outstanding in the three games of the tourney, ripping 10 hits in 15 at-bats for a blistering .667 batting average. Becker started swinging his hot bat in the district tournament when he ripped 11 hits in six games. He now had 21 hits in post-season play.

Becker and Stephen Regagliati cracked two hits apiece and Greg Shannon was the winning pitcher for Lincoln Glen in the 7-5 win over Gilroy in the section championship game at Los Altos High School.

Becker ripped five hits, including a triple, and scored three runs to lead Lincoln Glen to the 18-1 win over Gilroy in the tourney opener. Jimmer Castignani tripled and singled twice in the win and K.C. Brooks had three hits and was the winning pitcher. John Shaffer added two hits for LGLL.

Castignani doubled twice and was the winning pitcher for Lincoln Glen in the 9-1 win over Oak Ridge. Becker doubled and singled twice and Regagliati had two hits.

Lincoln Glen had won five of six games to take the District 12 title.

Shannon drove in five runs with two hits and was the winning pitcher in an 11-0 win over Branham Hills.

Becker was 3-for-3 to drive in three runs and he scored four times in a 12-3 win over Cambrian. Shaffer was 2-for-3 with a double and was the winning pitcher, striking out five. Castignani added two hits.

Becker was 3-for-3 with a double a game later, but Lincoln Glen lost 4-1 to Almaden.

Shaffer singled and doubled and was the winning pitcher and Becker doubled and tripled in a 3-1 elimination game win over Branham Hills.

Lincoln Glen then beat Almaden two straight, 7-5 and 17-1, to clinch the District 12 title.

Regagliati homered and singled and Shaffer had two hits in the 7-5 win. Shannon picked up the mound win, fanning seven.

Becker was 3-for-5 with a triple and Regagliati doubled and homered to lead Lincoln Glen to the 17-1 win over Almaden in the title game. Brooks was the winning pitcher.
